Last year we were gifted a Vitamix and it has totally improved the final product of the smoothies we originally made in a regular blender. This year we purchased the Vitamix 100th Anniversary Cookbook by Jodi Berg, PhD. I had no idea the Vitamix has been around this long and is still 100% family-owned! The first 27 pages of the cookbook were an eye-opening history lesson. For example, it was Jodi's great-grandfather, William Grover Barnard Sr. who had the vision and understanding of the importance of whole foods and a plant-based diet long before it was ever popular. Can you imagine the challenges he must have faced in the 60's when American consumers were being sold the concept of quick and easy pre-packaged processed foods?
Fast forward a couple of generations, and Jodi's dad, John Barnard, is 80 years old and can "hike circles around people half his age and he weighs half as much". That is a quote from the book. Apparently, John is devoted to his daily smoothie and makes it by the gallon to have on hand all week. So we thought to try this ourselves.... what a great idea! Let's make a small mess in the kitchen once and enjoy deliciousness for several days. So that is exactly what we did, and here are our results.

John Barnard's Green Smoothie drink is included in the cookbook, although, I feel my organic blueberries overtook the green color and made it more purple. Excluding the cold water and ice, there are a dozen ingredients! Dandelion greens, grapes, lime, mango, kiwi, cucumber, carrot, fresh pineapple, banana, frozen blueberries, fresh ginger, and flaxseed.
Can't wait to see what else we will make in our Vitamix next.
